The Institute of Strong Current Electronics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences has developed a new type of non-invasive blood glucose meter. Compared with traditional blood collection blood glucose meters, this technology eliminates fingertip blood collection, eliminates the pain of diabetic patients, and does not require test paper for testing, which greatly reduces the cost of using blood glucose meters.
The technology uses optical principles and utilizes the penetrability of light. Russian scientists selected the human earlobe as the test point, using a clip-type earring type detector to emit a beam of light on one side of the earlobe and receive the penetrating beam on the other side. The received signal is processed to obtain the value of glucose in the blood. Preliminary clinical trials have shown that the detection error of this technology is less than 5%. Since the detector uses a laser diode as a light source and an optical filter as a receiving signal processor, this technical solution makes the developed blood glucose meter have the characteristics of low cost and convenient use. Compared with traditional blood glucose meters, the test process does not require test strips, which saves about $ 500 in consumables costs for diabetics each year.
Based on the research and development achievements of this technology, the institute established the "Electronic Medical Device" company to conduct mass production of this new type of blood glucose meter. To this end, in 2011, the seed funds of the Russian venture capital company and the British Oxford Russia Business Innovation Trust (ORBIT) venture capital fund jointly invested 21 million rubles (approximately US $ 7 million) in venture investment in the industrialization of the project. According to the R & D and production plan of the project, clinical trials of blood glucose meters will be completed by the end of 2012, and the first batch of products will be launched in early 2013.
The United States and Israel are also conducting research and development of such products, but their products have not been put on the market. Russian R & D personnel are confident that their products can surpass their competitors, and plan to expand production after the products are put on the market. To this end, Russian venture capital companies plan to invest an additional 80 million rubles (about 2.7 million US dollars).
