A few days ago, the bisphenol A new resin catalyst development project jointly undertaken by Jiangsu Polytechnic University and Tianjin Shuangfu Fine Chemicals Co., Ltd. passed the technical appraisal organized by Sinopec in Beijing a few days ago.
Bisphenol A is a product of dehydration and condensation of phenol and acetone under acidic catalysis. It is an important raw material for the production of other chemical products such as epoxy resin, polycarbonate, and flame retardant. At present, the global production capacity is about 3.2 million tons. For a long time, several major international companies have monopolized the production technology of bisphenol A, sold products only to China and blocked the export of technology, causing the domestic BPA products to rely heavily on imports. So far, the production capacity of bisphenol A in China is only 50,000 tons per year.
In order to change the domestic production status of bisphenol A, in the 1990s, Sinopec began to develop bisphenol A production technology with independent intellectual property rights, and established a 10,000-ton bisphenol A industrial test device in Tianjin Shuangfu Fine Co., Ltd. After several technical transformations, preliminary results were obtained. However, after repeated renovations, the catalysts in the three months of trial operation basically failed. The catalyst problem seriously hampered the progress of the development of bisphenol A industrial technology in China.
The catalyst research team led by researcher Chen Qun of Jiangsu Institute of Technology officially assumed the task of developing related catalysts. The research team identified the key factors affecting catalyst life and designed a new type of bisphenol A catalyst with excellent structure and performance. Industrial tests show that the catalyst has been operating for more than one year, the activity and selectivity of the catalyst have not decreased, and the output of the product has reached more than 10,000 tons. The quality of the product has been confirmed by the United States Lums Company to reach the level of carbon-grade quality.
