Differentiating trekking poles from 6 different angles

Trekking poles, as the name implies, are auxiliary instruments that are used when climbing outdoors. The trekking poles can increase the stability of the walking, keep the body in balance, and share some of the pressure on the legs when the user is climbing or hiking. According to the Institute, use of trekking poles can relieve at least 22% of the pressure on the legs and knees.

We will distinguish the trekking poles from six different angles, so that everyone can understand such an outdoor mountain climbing artifact.

(The formula at the end of the article is entitled "How to pick the correct length of trekking pole.")

1. Number of trekking poles:

In theory, the fewer the number of sections, the simpler, more durable, more robust, and lighter the trekking pole structure, but the lower the length of the telescoping length adjustment.

Two-step trekking poles: Suitable for skiing, using trekking poles to help a great partner.

Three trekking poles: more commonly used for hiking, climbing, crossing and other outdoor sports partners, is the most balanced choice.

Four trekking poles: They can be stored in shorter lengths, but their weight is increased. Easy to put in the bag, suitable for long-distance travel partners.

2. Handle shape:

Straight shank: more suitable for mountaineering. The most popular type of cane shape is theoretically lighter in weight. When used, the trekking pole forms a 90-degree angle with the elbow joint, and the wrist needs to be parallel to the ground. Straight-shank trekking poles are more conducive to upper-limb strength (double-stick) and relieve leg fatigue.

T handle: Because the shape of the design is more like a crutch, it is also known as the old man. The weight is heavier than the straight shank and the curved shank, and it is more suitable for flat-distance hiking at a certain distance. Prolonged use will cause the wrist to become sour. T-handles do not work well with wristbands.

Curved handle: It is a professional trekking pole. When you hold it, the angle between the trekking pole and the elbow joint is 45 degrees. Suitable for walking on the ground, using a narrow range.

3. Locking method:

Internal lock: lighter weight, poorer locking ability, locking by means of fixing bolts, safety performance. When wearing thick gloves, it is inconvenient to operate.

External locks: The three types of locks have the heaviest weight, but they have the best locking ability, the highest stability, and the strongest. The operation is easy and simple, and it can be operated with thick gloves.

Z/M rod inner cable lock (folding stick): The light weight of the three types of locks is the lightest, and most of the Z-bars cannot be adjusted to a great length. They must be selected according to their height. There is now an integrated locking method with an external lock at the top, which can be adjusted appropriately, but heavier. The stick of M is the same as the stick of Z, but there is only one more section. Z sticks are not suitable for mountaineering. The stems are lighter and cannot bear heavy weight.

4. Stick shape:

Round: A club shape that is more popular. Lighter weight, easier to process; but poor support, easy to break.

Oval shape: The shape of the shaft is a flat and oval shape. It can be fixed and cannot be rotated. However, it has strong support and is not easily broken.

5. Stick body material:

Aluminum alloy: Aluminum alloy rods are the cheapest, generally divided into three types: 6061 aluminum, general strength, general performance. 7075 aluminum, high strength, far better than mild steel, good corrosion resistance, belonging to aviation-grade materials. 7001 aluminum, less than 7075 aluminum high strength than the weight of 7075 aluminum, but 7001 aluminum has a strong resistance to bending, more used as a tent pole material.

Carbon fiber: The main advantage of carbon fiber trekking poles is their light weight. They are generally about 50g lighter than aluminum alloy rods, and they are more expensive than aluminum. However, the strength of carbon fiber rods is moderate, but the strength of the transverse force is better than that of aluminum alloys and titanium alloys. Therefore, it is a good choice for lighter weight.

Titanium alloys: Titanium alloy trekking poles are rare and the most expensive of the three materials. Titanium metal weighs more than aluminum alloys, but titanium alloys are stronger and more durable than aluminum alloys, so they can be made with less material and lose weight without affecting strength. Titanium alloy rods rarely appear in people's sights, not because titanium is too expensive, but because of the difficulty of processing.

6. Handle material:

Rubber/Plastic: The weight is the heaviest, the price is the lowest, the hand feels hard, and the hand is easy to slippery after sweating. It is not suitable for the rainy or sweaty hands of the palm of the hand. In winter, it will be cold, but it is rather strong.

Foam material: light weight. The price is moderate, feel good, soft, and can maintain better friction when sweating. Foam materials used in low-end walking sticks are relatively poor. They are prone to deformation and lose their elasticity after prolonged use or when exposed to moisture. High-end cane foam material is more durable, it is the most popular cane material in the market

Cork: Cork is lightweight, durable, and strong. True cork prices are high, friction is good, grip is good, thermal conductivity is poor, cool hands in the summer, not enough foam in the winter to warm their hands.

Extra small tips:

Rejection plate: The trapping plates produced by different manufacturers have holes of different specifications, so they cannot be used universally. Larger trap plates are more suitable for use in outdoor sports in snow.

Cushioning function: Some trekking poles use spring-damping devices that reduce the impact on the shoulders and arms. The trekking pole with cushioning function is not suitable for any outdoor environment. The mudstone road that is difficult to walk may provide cushioning and make people feel comfortable. However, when walking through rocky areas, snow fields, mountain climbing and other outdoor activities, trekking poles are required to provide more support and balance. It is necessary to choose according to the actual situation and the user's habits.

How to choose a suitable length of trekking pole

Different groups of people have different requirements for trekking poles. How long is the trekking pole's length the most suitable? There is a calculation formula on the Internet. According to the formula, the length of the trekking pole that suits you can be obtained.

Your height from your elbow to the ground is a
Palm width is c
Your maximum downgrade is y
When you are downhill, the pace is b

You need length of trekking pole length=a+c
Downhill you need length of trekking pole =

Root number [a^ 2+b^ 2-2abcos (180-(90-y)]+b

for example:

My height 170CM, palm width 8CM
Elbow to ground height 100CM
The maximum downgrade slope is 30°
Downhill pace 25CM
I need a trekking pole length = 108CM
I need a trekking pole length of 30° below = root number (100^2+25^2-2*100*25*cos120+8=121.22+8=129.22CM
I need a trekking pole length of 0.01° - 29.99° slope = 108 to 129.22CM

There is also a simple formula: height (cm) x 0.685
