New strategy. Researchers use monodisperse gold nanoparticles as cross-linkers for the three-dimensional network structure of hydrogels. The gold-sulfur coordination bonds connect the polymer chains to the gold nanoparticles, using the excellent photothermal properties and coordination of the gold nanoparticles. The dynamic instability of the bond at high temperatures has successfully achieved a significant improvement in the self-healing properties of the nanocomposite hydrogel. In addition, a large number of cross-linking sites provided by a large amount of unsaturated gold atoms on the surface of the gold nanoparticles in the material greatly increase the degree of branching of the gel network, making the material have excellent mechanical properties.

The experimental results show that the novel material can achieve 96% self-repair in 1 minute under the induction of near-infrared light with a wavelength of 808 nm. At the same time, the team's biosafety evaluation of the gel showed that the material has good injectability and biocompatibility, and can be used as a drug carrier-loaded anticancer drug for controlled release under near-infrared light.
